Pitigliano is a typical village in the Maremma Grosseto unique to the particularity of being built entirely on a tuffaceous rock, which makes it one of the most interesting of the tuff.
Arriving in Pitigliano from the sea, up the road 74 Maremmana, you notice the houses that protrude from a large outcrop of tufa, absolutely straight. The cliff of Pitigliano is surrounded on three sides by many gullies, full of caves dug out of tufa, in the valley flowing rivers Lens, Meleta and Proch.
The village stands on a plateau formed by the water lens, and Meleta Proch, is certainly one of the most beautiful art in Tuscany and Italy which preserves monuments of interest ranging from the medieval to the eighteenth century.
Founded by the Romans around nearby Etruscan necropolis and bounded by walls, in the Middle Ages became the possession of the family Aldobrandeschi the end of the thirteenth century, the center was inherited by the Orsini, and became the capital after the county in which it remained until the early seventeenth century , when it was conquered by the Medici, who incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in 1604.
Pitigliano is also known as "little Jerusalem" due to the presence of a synagogue and a fairly large Jewish community that has always managed to find a good integration with the local population.
During the Second World War, during the German occupation and the Italian Social Republic, Jews in the country is dispersed in the countryside, where, despite the roundups and the continuous risk of accusations, they could count on a vast network of solidarity.
